the course in brief

  • Duration:one year.
  • Hours: 1,000 hours of which 600 classroom hours and 400 hours of internship.
  • Qualification obtained: Higher technical education diploma (European EQF Level 4).
  • Partners: Companies in the entertainment sector, including: Civica Scuola di Teatro Paolo Grassi (Milan), Pim Off, Artevox Produzioni (Vimercate), Tihsler Samanthakhan (Milan).
  • Project work:  At the final exam, students present a project completed during the course in close collaboration with companies in the sector.

During the course, students will have the opportunity to participate in shows and events in the sector.

Who is
the Costume Designer

The Theatrical Costume Designer or Costume Designer is responsible for the clothing and every detail that concerns the image of the characters of a theatre play, film or television show.
They design and supervise the creation of the actors' costumes, and choose their footwear, jewellery and accessories.
The course trains a professional who is able to graphically represent stage costumes, to choose the fabrics and techniques for making them and to design and apply the most suitable decorations thanks to a thorough knowledge of patternmaking and tailoring techniques.
Thanks to their solid historical-artistic training, they create impeccable creations from a historical point of view and reinterpret the costumes according to the style, atmosphere and setting of the show, in collaboration with the director, the set designer and the choreographer.

Subjects and workshops

Theoretical foundation

History of theatre and cinema, history of fashion, costume and accessories are the basis of the theatre costume designer's training.
These will allow the costume designer to make the right choices in the research phase and in the definition of the style of the stage costumes.
The course also gives the student skills in the properties and characteristics of use of fabrics and fashion materials.

core workshops

In the design workshops, the student learns to create sketches and figurines using photoshop, CAD modelling programs and digital textile design; they learn how to manage model creation; they learn how to use 4.0 digital technologies and fabric printing for ornaments and applications.

Internship

The student will carry out the internship in a company in the entertainment sector: this may be a theatre, a company that organises events, video production houses and television productions that have expressed interest in the profile and support the course launch.
300 hours of real work experience to get to the heart of a profession of high Made in Italy craftsmanship.
