Specialist in innovation for the textile sector with multisector applications

Course description

This course will train a specialist who will be familiar with all the stages of the textile chain and who will be able to monitor the production process, from the purchase of the raw material to the finished product. These specialists will be able to evaluate, select and market materials and textile products and select the best suppliers, in Italy as well as abroad. They will be able to carry out quality checks both on the process and on the textile product itself, in compliance with the standards in force in the target markets and with reference to the sustainability and excellence standards of “Made in Italy” products. As regards the creative side of the process, they will participate in product planning both from the stylistic-graphic design and technical points of view, using the CAD system. These competencies are completed by organization skills and the knowledge of English, especially as regards sector-specific terminology. These specialists will be able to work both in the traditional and technical textile fields, contributing to the innovation process in terms of: information sources research, the development of solutions and the production of new prototypes. As a consequence, they will be able to integrate themselves in the research and development of innovative products and processes, as regards yarns, fabrics and their finishing. They will work in an international environment establishing and maintaining relationships at different levels.

Areas of activity

  • Collaboration with the planning, production, purchasing and sales departments with the aim of meeting clients’ implicit and explicit demands, both for clothing and for technical textile items for industrial use.
  • Evaluation of product and process innovations from environmental sustainability and safety points of view, as well as the evaluation of the environmental impact of a product / process from a LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) standpoint.
  • Selection and/or evaluation of the characteristics and quality of the materials; assessing their use during the different stages of the textile production chain as well as their eco-sustainability.
  • Style and technical planning of the innovative product using the best technologies available for the different production stages.

Employment opportunities

hese trained specialists can be integrated into different areas of the production chain: spinning, weaving, textile finishing (dying, printing and finish), and manufacture. They can carry out quality controls on processes and textile products; they can be employed by research and textile innovation centres; they can assist designers in choosing the most suitable materials for planning and developing a collection; they can market yarns and fabrics; they can work in the material and product purchasing departments; they can assess Italian and foreign suppliers; they can work both in the traditional and technical textile industries.

Didactic program (subjects and total number of hours)

The course is structured as follows: lessons, laboratories and practical activities held by technicians and professionals working in the fashion and textile industries, as well as visits to companies and participation in trade fairs, for a total of 2,000 hours broken down into:

  • 1,200 hours of Lessons, Laboratories and Practical activities, visits to companies, Fashion/textile trade fairs, Museums and Foundations;
  • 800 hours of internship.

The course consists of specialising and cross training modules:

  • Selecting textile materials and products, according to their structural features and possible use – 260 hours
    Textile materials – Textile surfaces – Manufactured products – Textile CAD laboratory.
  • Managing the textile finishing production process, ensuring compliance with the following requirements: technical planning, sustainability and implicit and explicit contractual requirements – 186 hours  
    Textile finishing cycle – Company management and sustainability tools – Sustainable management of company processes: applying a tool.
  • Performing a quality check on a textile product – 148 hours
    Qualitative and quantitative control of raw materials, textile surfaces, accessories and garments, according to their use and target market – Analysis of defects and their causes – Labelling and certification of textile products, both mandatory and voluntary.
  • Technical planning of a textile product or garment – 240 hours
    Research sources and techniques – Innovative textile products and Textile, Clothing and Fashion research macro scenarios; potential development in other sectors – Technical Stylistic planning – Project Financing – High performance team – Problem solving techniques.
  • Industrialisation process of the prototype – 126 hours
    Industrialisation process of the prototype – Production organization, planning and control – Logistics and supply chain – Development of the prototype using CAD software.
  • Contributing to the correct definition of a marketing and communication strategy; total number of hours: 68

Partner companies for internship

Each course year includes 400-hour curricular internships.
The course includes specific and personalized placement actions (scouting, coaching and competence assessment), to support participants in finding a suitable internship collocation. Such actions aim to match companies and candidates in an efficient manner.
The network of companies offering internships is very wide and includes companies from the Fashion and Textile industries. They cover: small, medium and large companies, artisan enterprises, consultancy and services firms.

The course includes:

Laboratory photos/videos, visits to companies, participation in fairs, educational visits, test laboratories, CAD laboratory, use of sector-specific software and use of the Centrocot e-learning platform (for didactics support, practical activities as well as for sharing materials and events). During the two-year course, students will participate in Trade fairs and Events and will visit companies.

Type of Qualification

Expert technician certificate, recognized all over Europe (P.C.M. Decree dated 25/07/2008) and equivalent to the Fifth European level, provided that students have attended at least 80% of the course hours and have passed the final exams.
